These days, it might seem like the “cloud” in “cloud data warehouse” is almost redundant. It’s been exciting to see just how cloud-friendly data warehouse platforms have become, and how they have lowered the barrier to entry. But entry is just the first step, and ongoing operations become much more important over time. In that context, running your data warehouse exclusively in one cloud, with consumption-based billing, can pose significant challenges.
Some organizations, especially those in highly regulated industries, may prefer to use optimized hardware, on-premises, under their own physical management. Others may be all-in on the cloud, but need to avoid the cloud concentration risks that come with working with a single hyperscaler. For them, an architecture that decentralizes data warehousing may work best. Consumption-based pricing models may facilitate experimental work, but once customers learn their workloads’ steady state, they may prefer capacity-based pricing, instead.
