I love IFTTT, the service that let’s me tie digital services and physical devices together via recipes so when a stock price I’m tracking falls, I get a text, or an email or even make the fan in my study turn on. So I was super pumped about this week’s guest, Linden Tibbets, who is the CEO and co-founder of IFTTT (it stands for if this, then that).
IFTTT has a new iPhone app out Thursday, not only because more people were using the service on their mobiles, but also because IFTTT has a strategy to include capabilities of the iPhone as one of the channel options it offers. So using the IOS photos channel means a user could write an IFTTT recipe that automatically sends their iPhone snaps to Dropbox or Instagram. Tibbets discusses how the company plans to build native apps to let people build recipes that take advantage of the hardware in their phones.
Imagine the stuff you could build if you could use your phone’s GPS or Bluetooth chip as a trigger! That mindset of being able to hack the real world and physical world is a big discussion in the podcast as is IFTTT’s plan to make money. We also discuss the creativity challenge inherent in the internet of things today, when we have a lot of cool connected stuff, but aren’t sure what to do with it. Enjoy!
