Facebook announces video on Instagram

At an event held in Facebook’s Menlo Park campus, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom just announced that the social network is making a change to the platform, and it involves video.


The photo sharing network will now give the platform’s 130 million users the option to record videos and share them on their feeds. The platform allows 15 seconds of video and the ability to splice clips, similar to Twitter’s popular Vine app. Users will be able to edit a clip shorter than 15 seconds, but looped videos will not make it on the platform.

There are also 13 special video-only filters, which can be put onto any clip seamlessly and viewed in real time before publish. The filters are right in line with Instagram’s traditional, vintage style, and offer the same color-saturated tones that make them so popular.

Systrom said the company has also made advancements in taking video through its image stabilization feature, Cinema. When tracking a moving device or a rampant kid at play, Cinema reduces the bouncing and shaking of the camera to give a much smoother image throughout the video.

Video on Instagram will be available for iOS, Android and viewable on the web.
