It’s currently tops in the U.S. box office, but “Despicable Me” has earned another distinction. Green geeks will appreciate that the 3D computer animated film was rendered using a compact, IBM-supplied server farm (the size of just four parking spaces) that uses 40 percent less power than a conventional design. Among the benefits: cutting down on the air-conditioning. Hopefully, this data center strategy will spread among other movie makers. Considering the 3D mania that has gripped the industry, there’s a good chance that it will.
