What Comes Next For the Web?

1Executive Summary

UPDATED : We are on the cusp of a massive shift that will force us to rethink the very nature of the Internet and how it pertains to information. These changes means we will be in uncharted territories — the NewNet.

On Monday morning, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (PST), GigaOM and GigaOM Pro will be livestreaming a salon-style NewNet Roundtable from our downtown San Francisco office (embedded below). The discussion will be led by Om Malik and feature Caterina Fake (Hunch), Tom Coates (Yahoo), Bret Taylor (Facebook, FriendFeed), Jeffrey Veen (TypeKit), and other major players from Silicon Valley. Check back here for access to our exclusive liveblog and post-event interviews.

  1. I wish you would just put your videos on YouTube that way I could actually watch your event. As it is, your shitty streaming player doesn’t allow me to buffer ahead, and so I can’t watch your event. Why is this so hard?

    1. @jaxdun — we really like our livestream! the quality during the event was great. sorry to hear you’re having problems with this archive video. to be clear, the player allows you to skip ahead to other points in the stream; are you having a different problem?

  2. There have been lots of observations about the attractiveness of exchanging information between friends and other people of similar interests / mutual attractiveness. The MAJOR risk is an echo chamber and group think.

    1. Eric, I was wondering this as well. Anyone able to share interesting examples of companies/tools/services working on this problem — providing flashes of insight from outside the “usual” networks/groups/etc?

  3. Can we ask Questions during the event?

    1. I’m passing these queries on to the various moderators — they’ll incorporate into the discussion. I anticipate that some of these will be addresses later in the conversation, around discovery. And I believe they’re talking about the second question right now!

  4. Context: Adding tags to data is cool; but how do you go about finding and more important trusting that information.
eg. How does it impact google/other search?

in addition, how do you go about standardizing, when for example facebook might want to have their own tag-sets for their social repository
