About

In addition to being an Analyst for Gigaom Research, Richard Handford is a writer and researcher on telecoms and sustainability matters. His background is the mobile and broadband markets with particular interests in strategy and regulation. He is intrigued by how these areas cross over. The kind of question that he likes to ask is which governments are investing in broadband technology to stimulate a country’s economy during a downturn? Are they right?

His second enthusiasm is in renewable energy and sustainability. He’s interested in how to make the mobile industry more energy efficient. And he has studied how cellular networks can be powered in off-grid locations in the developing world by renewable energy. How mobile technology is deployed innovatively in the developing world (mobile banking, for example) is another theme for him.

He has contributed to the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and The Economist.
