About

Jim Turner is a recognized expert in the space where digital media and television intersect, bringing a unique blend of broad experience in both media areas in start-ups, expanding companies, and large corporations. Jim is currently consulting with media companies, brands and advertisers on innovation and strategy around evolving trends in video/OTT/TV Everywhere, television, smartphones/tablets, Smart TV, and connected living.

Jim is an Analyst for Gigaom Research who was most recently Senior Vice President, Product Strategy and Business Development at Canoe Ventures, the JV of the six largest cable companies charged with bringing interactive television, dynamic ad insertion for VOD, addressable advertising, and new data measurement to a national television footprint. Prior to joining Canoe, Jim was Vice President, Product at Synacor, Inc. (the leading white-label supplier of digital media portals, authentication services, and premium content to high speed internet providers), where he led product strategy and direction including the creation of their industry-leading TV Everywhere business.

Before joining Synacor, Jim was Vice President, Digital Media at A&E Television Networks, where he led the development and management of the company’s Internet, Advanced Television, and other digital media properties across all brands including A&E, The History Channel, and The Biography Channel.

Prior to A&E, Jim was Co-founder and President of AvitageMedia, a consulting and production company for advanced television, Internet, broadband, interactive advertising, and other media.

Jim began his career at CBS, and since then has held executive positions in a number of companies in the interactive and digital media business (as well as co-founding three of his own), including SVP, Product at Women.com, EVP/COO of Astronet.com, GM/Executive Producer of Digital Media Studios (part of Digital Equipment Corporation), and VP Product Development of Kurzweil Music Systems.

Jim has an MBA in Marketing, and Masters and Bachelor’s degrees in technology, and holds two patents in the use of computers in music. He is active in a number of industry initiatives and organizations, and serves as an officer of the NY Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and was a former National Trustee.
