Dropbox announces Dropbox for Business Groups
Dropbox has added the social design element of Groups to Dropbox for Business. This is not currently available for other Dropbox accounts.
In essence, Groups provide a shorthand way to share files or folders with a specific list of people. This also allows a very simple way to onboard a new team member: adding the new worker to a group gives the team member immediate access to all the files and folders already shared. (Likewise, removing a user from a group blocks access in one step.)
The service integrates with Microsoft’s Active Directory, using the Groups API mechanism, administrators can programmatically create and manage Groups. Over 12,000 companies have been experimenting with Groups through the company’s early access program, although the Groups API functionality is only now being released.
There is no extra fee for using Groups, so it seems likely that many companies will opt to use it.
