Office 2016 for Mac Preview available

Microsoft has released a free ‘preview’ edition of Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac. Users on Windows, Android, and iOS have had numerous updates, but Mac users have had to wait four years since the last update.

Like the Windows 2013 version, the apps share the new ribbon menu styling, and are integrated with Microsoft OneDrive. Outlook and OneNote are included with Powerpoint, Excel, and Word.

Again, this is the new Microsoft, one that is responding aggressively to Google and Apple’s competitive productivity suites, which are basically free.

The biggest change relative to the old version is support for connected editing, and threaded comments in Word.

I have yet to use, but Word is a necessity at Gigaom Research, so I will be getting close up and personal in the next few weeks. I don’t know if I will use OneNote or Outlook on Mac, but Word, certainly.

I remain unclear about whether I will need Office 365 in the future, if I want connected editing. The FAQs don’t really answer that question. I will try to find out.
