Evernote releases work chat
Evernote recently announced a new work chat capability (see Short takes: Evernote launches new web client and to add Work Chat, Wunderlist links Dropbox, Box delays IPO again), and at the end of last week, they rolled it out.
In the screenshot below, the work chat icon appears below the search feature on the web client. As indicated, clicking on the share button on any note or notebook can create a chat with the shared item embedded.
Here’s a chat I had with my evil twin, Pseudo Boyd.
Here’s me sharing an article.
And here’s two articles embedded in the chat.
Evernote’s plan is to allow users to remain in Evernote when discussing the topics that the notes are about. This is another example of the contextual conversation trend which is sweeping across the work technology space like the flu (see Contextual conversation: Work chat will dominate collaboration), and moves Evernote into a different position in the market. Instead of being a coeditor and shared repository for documents, Evernote is now a communications tool as well, and that changes everything.
We’ll have to see how this all plays out, but the feature moves Evernote into competition with solutions like Office 365. Stay tuned.
