Dropbox is making headway against Box

Dropbox continues to make waves in its efforts to compete with Box with Dropbox for Business. In a blog post yesterday, Dropbox VP of Enterprise Strategy Ross Piper threw out some serious numbers: 800,000 organizations now use Dropbox for Business, and recent spike in adoption of over 200% by media companies. Piper’s reasoning:

Why the growth in this area specifically? For one, media and entertainment networks are vast and tight-knit. Companies in this industry frequently work with hundreds of freelancers, who in turn work with many different companies — which means that collaboration across organizational boundaries is critical. That’s an area where Dropbox for Business shines, providing simple yet powerful ways to securely share with both internal teams and external partners.

Perhaps Dropbox chose the media and entertainment market as an area of focus for those very reasons.

Piper believes that widespread familiarity with Dropbox — hundreds of millions of users worldwide — means little training is needed, and because the entertainment industry is global Dropbox is a natural choice since 70% of users are outside the US.

Dropbox supports streaming sync, so sharing large files — very common in entertainment — is drastically faster.

As noted by Ark Hesseldahl, Dropbox announced signing Spotify in May, only days after Box announced landing GE four days earlier.

File sync-and-share has become the distributed core of today’s computing architecture (see Sector Roadmap: file sync-and-share platforms, and Social third-quarter 2013: analysis and outlook).  So, this battle will continue, but it seems that Dropbox is making real headway.
