Blackberry received 200,000 orders for Passport this week
Looks like John Chen’s gamble on the square Passport smartphone is paying off. He says that the company sold out on the Blackberry store and in 10 hours on Amazon.
This is small potatoes compared to the Apple 6 and 6 Plus sales — 10 million orders in just a few days — but Blackberry doesn’t expect to sell 100 million Passports. The company currently has less that 1% of the smartphone market, after being the market leader years ago. But Chen has slowed the company’s calamitous fall, and is attracting attention of the diehard BBN users with innovative moves, like the Passport, while pushing hard on the company’s security software.
In other good news for Chen, the company posted a smaller than expected loss earlier this week, while not meeting earnings projections.
