While "SOA" and "*aaS" have gathered dust as buzzwords, they provide more explanatory value than 'Hybrid'. The transition to cloud is first and foremost a rethinking of where applications run, and what infrastructures enable nimble and reliable delivery of the suite of applications that companies need for competitive advantage. You're right to call 'bullshit' on frankenstack implementations called 'private cloud' inside traditional IT organizations that used the term to overcome years of balkanization (Target and Playstation are only 2 examples of the many such that ended in tears). But 'Hybrid' runs the risk of masking similar bad behaviors, unless the organizations start by asking "What aspects of cloud make my business go faster, and compete more effectively at a lower cost?" The variable cost (CapEx to OpEx) model behind cloud economics need not be divided between AWS EC2 and IT cloudwashing; there are a range of compelling, cost-effective alternatives in between.
