The weekend review: IaaS, M2M data analytics, and tablet shipments
Last week on Gigaom Research, popular reports covered topics such as M2M data analytics for the energy sector, key IaaS components that should be evaluated in cloud migration, and the trends effecting future global tablet shipments.
First, in “Forecast: Global tablet shipments, 2012–2017,” Peter Crocker analyzes both global and regional trends in the tablet market. In 2014, it is expected that a low-priced tablet will emerge in the $40 to $100 range. Despite dropping prices, Crocker projects that shipment growth will decrease due to competition from wearables, “phablets,” and convertible laptops.
Next, analyst Janakiram MSV provides us with “A checklist for stacking up IaaS providers.” This report lists the key players in the IaaS market and then breaks down the key infrastructure components that should be evaluated before migrating workloads. The report is a must-read to better understand the fastest-growing segment of the worldwide cloud services market.
Last, in “Internet of things: the influence of M2M data on the energy industry,” Gigaom’s cleantech curator, Adam Lesser, takes a look at how M2M data is transforming the energy industry. This early market has found opportunity addressing many of the risks faced by the smart-grid and the oil and gas sectors. According to Lesser, “Both are adopting M2M networking combined with a layer of data analytics to help lower costs and drive efficiencies.”
