Now possible to drive Model S LA to NYC with only supercharging
Well, it’s official. You can now drive your Tesla Model S from LA to New York City, charging with supercharger stations. According to an @plugshare post on Twitter, one person has actually made the trip, charging along a route that weaves from California through Arizona, then northeast toward Chicago and east toward NYC.
A supercharge puts a battery at a 80 percent charge in 40 minutes, which should provide 170 miles of range. This baseline of about 150 miles of quick charge is one reason I don’t believe Tesla will ever introduce a car with a range under 200 miles, which is important when we look forward to 2015/2016 when we’ll see Tesla’s mid market luxury sedan. That car will have a major impact on whether Tesla’s skyrocketing valuation can be maintained.
Perhaps the best thing about Tesla’s supercharger rollout is that it did it without help from the government. Almost every industry, including the fossil fuel industries, has relied on the government to help build core infrastructure to enable an industry. But Tesla has managed to put chargers out there, carrying the cost itself. That’s no small accomplishment.
