Nest is great but what about window AC units?
With the big news that Google will acquire smart thermostat maker Nest, focus continues to be on centralized HVAC units when it comes to efficiency. But what about the millions of window units that are installed across the world in apartments and homes?
Enter the connected window air conditioning unit. Greentech Media reports:
And for at least one brand, the Wi-Fi connection can also give customers the chance to enroll in summertime residential demand response programs, during the season when electric bills tend to be highest.
Friedrich has teamed up with ThinkEco to make its Kühl (pronounced “cool”) air conditioners demand-response-ready out of the box using ThinkEco’s turnkey platform. Customers will have to purchase a FriedrichLink Wi-Fi kit (about $33 on Amazon), but can then join Consolidated Edison’s coolNYC program, which ThinkEco has been running for the past several years.
One of the reasons to have a connected AC unit isn’t just about demand response. Nest founder Tony Fadell commented recently that he believes one of the shifts in consumer behavior he’s seeing is the desire for people to monitor their homes when they’re not at home. Having a connected window AC unit would allow someone to do things like control the temperature setting or even pre-cool a room while someone heads home.
Window units make up 58 percent of air conditioning in the U.S. so this remains a fairly wide open and large market.
