IBM brings encryption ideas to the cloud computing table

According to “Talkincloud, “IBM is looking to tackle data encryption challenges through a new technique called ‘fully homomorphic encryption,’ a solution that aims to further protect data privacy and strengthen cloud computing security. The move comes as cloud services providers (CSPs) and their customers continue to worry about NSA spying activities, hacks like the recent Target security breach, and other privacy issues.”

Another type of encryption you say?  What’s new here?  IBM said this type of encryption leverages a mathematical object called an “ideal lattice” that will assist vendors with computations on client data while not revealing the original data.  IBM is locking this up in a new patent to protect their idea.

2014 will be the year of new types of security, including ideas like IBM’s new solution, and new cloud security companies.  While IBM clearly has something new, it’s not really new.  However, its application in the world of cloud computing is still something that needs specialized security approaches, and this seems to be one of them.  Watch for many more in the coming year.
