SuVolta gets licensing deal for its energy efficient chips
Chip startup SuVolta has a novel technique for layering chemicals on a chip that helps them conserve power. As of this summer, the company’s “Deeply Deplete Channel” technology is in production and the company says it’ll have applications across processors, SOCs (System-on-a-chip), and memory. You can watch a video here on the next-generation technology.
The tech is finally getting out of the lab as SuVolta announced it’s got a deal with Fujitsu to license it’s production technology for an energy efficient chip that will be used for image processing. SuVolta is seven years old now and it’s been working with Fujitsu since 2011.
Katie Fehrenbacher points out that manufacturers like the tech because it can be adapted to existing manufacturing plants. That’s no small detail since fabrication plants run into the billions of dollar price range to construct and being able to slot in a new chemical processing tech that can cut power use by 30 to 50 percent would give a chipmaker a cost effective, competitive edge. Here’s to the chips getting more energy efficient in a world where mobile connectivity is becoming paramount.
