Short takes: BBM launching for Android and iPhone, Salesforce and Workday announce deeper integration

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) will be launched for Android on September 21 and iPhone on September 22. The long-awaited (see BlackBerry announces BBM for iOS and Android this summer), and perhaps way too late BBM clients will be the first step in moving BlackBerry away from proprietary mobile devices.

In related news, BlackBerry is being shopped around and not finding many suitors. The company announced yesterday that a series of layoffs are planned that will cut up to 40% of the company, which two years ago had 17,000 employees, and 14% of the smartphone market. The company’s share has dwindled to 3%.

Obviously, whatever is going to happen to BlackBerry, it is going to be soon.


Salesforce, the CRM company, and Workday, the enterprise HR and financial software platform,  have announced an agreement to integrate the two companies products. This is a continuation of Salesforce’s push to make Chatter the leading social layer for the enterprise Main Stream architecture (see Salesforce drops Chatterbox, announces Salesforce Files) and has recently adopted an aggressive campaign of integration with best-of-breed software.

Major technical capabilities of the partnership are expected to include:

  • Force.com users will enjoy the ability to build applications using data directly from Workday’s applications.
  • Chatter users will be able to receive updates directly from Workday, allowing customers to securely act upon, collaborate around and share workforce data in real-time.
  • Workday HCM users will be able to use data from Salesforce to fuel greater workforce productivity and engagement.
  • Workday Financial Management users will be able to use data from Salesforce to achieve greater visibility into their financial and operational performance for improved decision making.

I find Salesforce’s push to build a large and growing ecosystem of companies which flow their information through Chatter to be compelling, and not matched by any other competitor. We’ll see if they can become the UX to an open Main Street architecture.
