Samsung smartwatch reported to debut in September

Get ready for the great smartwatch explosion.

Bloomberg reported today that Samsung’s smartwatch – which is apparently going to be called Galaxy Gear – is going to debut in September.

Samsung is apparently looking to get ahead of any potential Apple announcement with the unveiling of its Android-powered watch, which is reportedly going to function as a phone, though it’s unclear if it will channel the call through an attached smartphone (the way which other call-enabled watches like the Martian watch works).

I’m interested to see how responsive the watch is since it’s loaded with Android. Android is a heavy OS for such a small form factor, which is why others like Agent have optimized around more lightweight OS’s such as Microsoft’s .NET microframework.

Either way – expect Samsung’s launch of Galaxy Gear to be the first of many smartwatch debuts this fall.
