Google glasses and the connected home
The video that Stacey Higginbothom posted showing Google glass controlling the connected home is worth a look. The idea is to use Google glasses to control devices in the home, the so called Internet of Things. That includes everything from your garage door to lights to thermostats.
The video leads me to a question I’ve been mulling over, which is that there are connected devices we want active control over so we want them connected. And then there are devices we want connected so we don’t have to control them. I’d put thermostats in that category. The beauty of the Nest thermostat is that it’s self learning. It optimizes energy consumption by changing its setpoints automatically by crunching sensor data, including activity, temperature, humidity and outside weather data. It works because we don’t have to. I could see connected pool pumps or lighting working in a similar way, adjusting constantly to our behavior.
So then what would you need Google glasses for? Well conceivably things like the home stereo or the washing machine, devices we want to turn on and off, and adjust. Are there advantages to gesture based user interaction, like swiping in the air to go to the next song on my stereo rather than having to swipe my iPhone? Probably. Do I want to wear a pair of glasses around at home? My initial answer is no, but then again, I’m always surprised at how much people are willing to accept new technology. The next iteration of this question is whether people will begin accepting technology not just in their lives, but on their bodies.
