Sewer Powered Clouds Are Coming
Global Foundation Services, the cloud services division of Microsoft, is backing the research and development of a zero carbon data center. Solar? Wind? Nope. Crap. Literally, crap. These clouds are powered by sewage treatment bi-products to power cloud services without drawing from the grid. You can read this article for additional details.
This all works using a self-contained anaerobic digester, designed to process animal manure, organic, or septic waste. The waste is transformed into biogas, which can be used to heat water or generate electricity to power cloud data centers.
While this seems a bit farfetched, the reality is that this scheme has a lot of potential. Data centers can be located anywhere, and power is typically the biggest driver around where you put them. If there is a power source that’s both cheap and green, this could be a match made in heaven.
As we grow the number of data centers, and thus the power required to run them, we should be thinking out of the box about how to produce the required power. Perhaps Cleantech is just not that clean after all.
