To your point Jo, I believe that it’s important to keep the standard as pure as you can, for as long as you can. However, the standard is largely driven by those with the most money, either a collection of smaller players or one large one. So, will they be working for the interest of their standard, or the interest of themselves longer term?

It will be an interesting ride.

Dave,

I was at the Summit and heard an interesting comment by Jonathan Bryce, Exec Director of the OpenStack Foundation. He said the board is thinking of tying the OpenStack trademark to compatibility with the APIs. So if you are a vendor selling an OpenStack product, you may only use the official trademark if you are compliant with the APIs. In other words, they are taking this interoperability thing pretty seriously. I'd still like to see more end users influencing the direction of OpenStack and it appears they are trying to get them onboard too.

Speaking as a person who attended the just concluded OpenStack Summit, there are plenty of large enterprise implementations in full production. Only some of them are willing to talk about it.

Interoperability and compatibility will continue to be issues, but I doubt that anyone would argue that VMware and AWS don't play nice with anyone. At least the OS community is willing to seriously address the issue. As the platform evolves, out of all the cloud platforms it has by far the best chance to become a de facto standard. In this day and age, that is about all you can hopeful. More on my thoughts on cloud platform standards here:
