For Yahoo, an Apple tie-up would be a small step back to mobile relevance
The Wall Street Journal reported tonight that Yahoo is in talks with Apple to make its content more prominent on iOS devices. The partnership would integrate Yahoo’s news and sports content tightly with Siri, according to the Journal, perhaps even featuring Yahoo content through other built-in apps.
A deal would make sense on several levels: Yahoo already serves as a default content provider for financial and weather information for iOS, and Yahoo is also a go-to source for Siri searches. And Yahoo is a logical alternative as Apple moves aggressively to wean itself from Google’s mobile content and services.
Yahoo is no longer the major player in mobile content or advertising that it was in the early days of mobile data, and a tie-up with Apple would certainly draw traffic and raise its profile among consumers. If Yahoo is to reclaim its lost relevance, though, it will have to draw traffic from Android and other operating systems. So while an Apple partnership might be a good first step, it won’t be nearly enough for a company desperate to get back in the mobile game.
