Who will be the first dominant mobile game maker?

The makers of Cut the Rope have launched Pudding Monsters, as Bloomberg reports here, a new title for iOS and Android devices. The Moscow-based developer ZeptoLab hopes to duplicate the enormous success of the blockbuster title, which has been downloaded more than 100 million times since its release.

Mobile gaming struggled to gain any serious traction for years, but the space has gone mainstream alongside the popularity of smartphones and tablets with touchscreens. Ubiquitous franchises like Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja and Plants vs. Zombies spawned successful sequels, and Rovio is even creating a movie based on its smash Angry Birds. But the developers of those games have yet to match those successes with a second title. Meanwhile, EA and other developers that have expanded into mobile have yet to build a blockbuster mobile game from the ground up — their successes have generally been mobile extensions of franchises that became hits on other platforms.

Mobile has clearly become a stand-alone platform that requires the kind of specialized talent displayed by Rovio, ZeptoLab and others. It will be interesting to see who breaks out of the pack by creating a second smash franchise, and who becomes a one-hit wonder.
