The weekend review: enterprise search, the reinvention of health care IT, and Google meets Dish
As we enter the final month of 2012, GigaOM Pro readers are focused on what the next year will bring. Interest in cloud and big data–related topics remain strong, especially in light of big data’s role in the recent presidential campaign. And with all eyes on LTE implementation, the future of the wireless market was also a popular topic this week.
As an increasing number of companies are turning to big data, they are recognizing that developing comprehensive tools that merge big data with powerful search capabilities presents a new set of challenges. In “Unlocking big data’s potential with search,” Paul Miller identifies the key requirements and opportunities in this emerging market, and he provides an overview of what existing IT providers and open-source communities are already doing to address these needs.
Next, in “Here is how cloud computing, big data, and some innovation can reinvent healthcare,” David Linthicum tackles the thorny topic of health care IT — or the lack thereof. While recent attention has typically focused on regulatory compliance and privacy issues, Linthicum notes that the health care industry at large suffers from underfunding. With this in mind, he proposes a few opportunities to strategically leverage the cloud and big data to provide proactive and affordable IT solutions to health care providers.
Last, in “How Dish Network and Google could take aim at carriers,” Colin Gibbs analyzes the recent news about a Google–Dish Networks wireless service, which could leverage Dish’s LTE spectrum with Google’s considerable financial resources, the Android platform, and smartphone manufacturing capabilities. However, neither company has experience serving as a mobile operator or building out the necessary infrastructure to get a network up and running. Gibbs provides some context for why this joint venture could be an important effort to disrupt the wireless market.
