First Solar being considered for world’s largest solar project

Shares of leading American solar maker First Solar have dropped a whopping 68 percent over the past year. But there were signs of life today as reports surfaced that First Solar’s cadmium telluride thin film panels were being considered for the Blythe solar farm, which at 1,000 megawatts would be the largest solar project in the world. Florida based NextEra is the developer on the project after taking it over from bankrupt Solar Trust. There may be multiple suppliers on the Blythe project due to its massive size but a significant cut of the action would be a big win for First Solar’s thin film technology, which has an 11.3 percent efficiency. The solar maker also says the tech has the fastest energy payback time of current PV technologies at under one year. It’s been a blood bath of bankruptcies in solar the past twelve months, and First Solar is fighting on by further focusing on the utility scale solar development market, both here and abroad. This would certainly be a step forward.
