Today in Mobile
Fellow analyst Chetan Sharma has a solid post today over at GigaOM that looks at what the future holds for mobile carriers. With voice revenues on the wane and the gap between data consumption and data revenues continuing to grow, Sharma says over-the-top offerings and value-added services are the next big opportunity for operators. I absolutely agree, but those kinds of things are where carriers have consistently failed to compete with other segments of the industry. Capitalizing on OTT and VAS requires completely different strategies than simply charging by the megabyte or by the minute, and it requires the evolutionary thinking that very rarely exists among carriers.
