CNET reports that Nokia has a “contingency plan” in case its strategy of partnering with Microsoft on Windows Phone handsets fail to live up to its expectations. But just what that plan is remains a mystery, and I don’t see any attractive options on the table: Only Apple can produce iOS devices, while standing out among all those Android manufacturers is nearly impossible. And no other operating system has shown much promise. So while the “contingency plan” may comfort shareholders, Nokia’s future clearly hinges on the success of Microsoft’s mobile platform.
