Today in Cleantech
My colleague Barb Darrow writes that “the other shoe has dropped” with today’s announcement from HP that it will introduce low power servers built on 64-bit Intel Atom Centerton chips. HP already has a partnership with startup Calxeda to introduce ARM servers later this year and it’s becoming clear HP doesn’t want to be left behind in the low power server market. And in another bit of news, Calxeda is arguing that its ARM cores could run alongside x86 chips in the data center, with servers offloading cloud processing the way graphics processing units (GPUs) have been paired with CPUs for years. This is the first sign that Calxeda may be concerned that the power benefits of ARM cores may not be convincing enough, particularly in light of signs from HP, and really SeaMicro, that Intel Atom based processors are an easier sell to customers because code doesn’t have to be recompiled.
