Today in Mobile

Today’s must-read is this informative piece from The New York Times on companies that are developing technologies to make spectrum more efficient. The story includes some promising technologies including cognitive radio, which essentially enables phones to find airwaves that are not otherwise being used at the moment. There are still some major challenges here — cognitive radio may require handsets that feature several radio chips, for instance — but I think the biggest hurdle here will be gaining the cooperation of carriers who have never shown much interest in working together for a solution. Carriers who have plenty of spectrum, for instance, aren’t likely to lift a thumb to help those whose spectrum is already being pushed to the limit.
