Today in Mobile
It’s a pretty slow news day in mobile, so I’ll use this space to direct your attention to this eyebrow-raising post from Dean Bubley on how the concept of the minute “is killing the phone industry.” Bubley questions the use of minutes as a universal standard for billing, claiming that it leads to “arbitrary pricing,” and he urges carriers to eschew their obsession with time (and, as an extension, with amounts of data) and focus instead on how mobile adds value to people’s lives. It’s a fascinating concept full of potential in terms of pricing and monetization. But because it’s addressed to carriers, it’s very likely to fall on deaf ears.
