Today in Connected Consumer
This is more Colin Gibbs’ beat then mine, but there are a few bits of connected consumer news worth noting out of the Mobile World Congress getting under way in Barcelona this morning. The biggest news is the unveiling of an alliance formed by Qualcomm, Mozilla and others to support a new web-based mobile OS to rival Android built on HTML 5 and Linux. The new OS is aimed at feature phones and low-end smartphonethat lack the processing power to run Android. Also notable is a deal between HTC and Dropbox to offer an alternative to Apple’s iCloud. Buyers of the new HTC One will get 25 GB of storage free from Dropbox for two years. Dropbox normally charges $9.99 a month for 50 GB. Of note for developers, Facebook announced the integration of operator billing for apps and content purchased through Facebook’s platform. Telefonica, Orange, T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, KDDI and Softbank have all signed on to support it.
