Today in Mobile

The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi is getting a lot of attention from today’s op-ed piece explaining “How Siri is ruining your cellphone service.” But my colleague Stacey Higginbotham has a great response here, noting that Siri itself isn’t to blame for increased data usage — the app simply makes it easier (and maybe more fun) to consume data. And I’ve said before that Siri isn’t an ideal user interface tool; it’s simply one of an increasing number of ways we can interact with our phones. Those ways will eventually include gestures, eye control, and even “thinking” your way around a phone via brainwaves. All those tools promise to make it easier to consume data, which is why we need solutions like Wi-Fi, white spaces and femtocells that can offload data traffic from traditional cellular networks.
