Boy Genius Report is attracting attention with this piece claiming Research In Motion is “leaning toward an outright sale of one or more divisions, or even the whole company.” BGR reports Samsung may be interested for several reasons, including RIM’s solid BlackBerry Messenger service, which Samsung could leverage to differentiate its lineup of Android handsets. I can see why Samsung might be interested in pieces of RIM’s operation, but I think an outright acquisition is highly unlikely: Samsung not only has a top-notch manufacturing business, it has a respectable platform in bada and it is working to integrate Tizen, an open source OS with great potential. So adding BlackBerry OS and/or BlackBerry 10 to the mix seems ridiculous.
