Today in Social
My GigaOM colleague Mathew Ingram is on top of the buzz about Twitter censorship that’s raging today. His thoughtful analysis shows how users are dependent on information and social media sources, and a “just don’t use them” attitude doesn’t really address potential problems. Google’s new privacy policy that’s getting loads of grief shows up in this line of thinking. At least Google says it will let you take back your data and, with a lot of opting-in and out and careful attention to sign-ons, preserve plenty of anonymity. Yes, that requires way too much work from most users. And users aren’t the only ones with data dependencies subject to the whims of suppliers. Goodreads, a favorite social curation site for books, is switching away from Amazon as its information supplier due to Amazon’s exclusivity requirements. Licensing is hard for big companies, too.
