My Weekly Update is about consumer and media tech platforms, but I didn’t get a chance to do one of my usual routines about them. “He who owns the API, owns the developer. He who owns the UI, owns the user.” Recent platform efforts are more about APIs than UIs. But remember how Netscape once challenged Microsoft Windows primarily by introducing a powerful new user interface for the cloud – and for apps before we called them apps – via the browser? Now Mozilla faces a tough challenge to its Firefox browser that threatens its business model, but it might be less at risk if it had continued to innovate in UI. Facebook may be acquiring Gowalla for its mobile UI skills. And Microsoft may finally have cracked the living room UI with TV services routed through Xbox Kinect and voice. I haven’t seen Forrester’s James McQuivey gush like this before, and he’s a very smart analyst.
