Mozilla renewed the browser search advertising deal with Google that’s responsible for the bulk of its revenues. Firefox might well have survived anyway, although it looks like Microsoft wasn’t going to offer a super-aggressive deal for Bing to replace Google as the default search option. Regardless of whether Firefox is the number two or number three browser, it represents somewhere between 15 percent and 25 percent of users (all those browser market share trackers over-represent techie users and probably under-represent Internet Explorer usage). That’s still a pretty powerful distribution platform. A Mozilla exec outlines some future technologies that could work their way into Firefox. I doubt an app store will do much damage, but I’m intrigued with the idea of identity management done via browser. That seems like a logical place to handle multiple, context-based personae.
