Today in Cloud

Fresh from their U.S. roll-out in September, Swiss public cloud infrastructure provider CloudSigma is making news again today by offering solid state (‘flash’) storage. The option will be available to customers in both Europe and the U.S. Although pricing had not been finalised when I spoke with CloudSigma CTO Robert Jenkins, he did stress that it would cost significantly more than their existing disk-based storage. Rather than using consumer SSDs to (by some measures) approach the cost of disk, CloudSigma is deploying enterprise-grade SSD to deliver what they see as a niche product. Jenkins suggested that the company might explore more mainstream use of SSD as flash prices fall, and as they gain a better understanding of usage patterns. CloudSigma’s existing billing model — which separates the costs of compute, storage and memory — makes it far easier for them to incorporate the SSD option into their price list, but others will doubtless follow.
