Today in Social

The day-after reviews of Facebook’s announcements are coming in, and they’re mostly about comparing video chat services. Google’s free Hangouts group video chat is a totally different product than Facebook’s 1:1 video calling via Skype (Ryan Kim offers tech detail), and it’s more “exciting,” if perhaps less useful. Om says in his newsletter that Skype will get a lot of usage from Facebook, but wonders how that will translate into revenues. Meanwhile, check out our Flash Analysis of Google+ that includes Hangouts. GigaOM readers are pretty bullish on Google+ – only 6% think Google doesn’t “get” social anymore. And they think the two companies likely to suffer the biggest impact from Google+ are Facebook and Skype. They think Twitter, LinkedIn and others won’t feel as much heat.
