Today in Mobile

It’s been a pretty slow news day in the mobile biz, so I wanted to direct your attention to this short post from The New York Times discussing Opera’s Mini browser. Mini uses only about 10 percent of the data required for other browsers, according to Opera, because it compresses Web pages through Opera’s servers before delivering them to the phone. That’s nothing new — Mini has been around for years and has built a sizable audience — but it can help save users money on data costs and perform better on slow or congested networks. So don’t be surprised if developers of other apps take a cue from Opera and build less data-intensive apps in this era of tiered data plans and increasingly taxed networks.
