This Reuters Breakingviews piece is generating lots of commentary since the NY Times picked it up. It suggests Microsoft should get out of its loss-producing search business and sell it to Facebook. Most commentators say Microsoft should hold on to Bing. The arguments: search is Microsoft’s entree into mobile and online in general; it’s the only way to make money in mobile and its market share isn’t awful; few other companies could actually afford to develop search. There’s also the best defense is a good offense case – Google is Microsoft’s biggest head-to-head competitor and search is its cash cow. And search is a major UI/navigation means, both web-wide and within apps. So in some ways search is a threat to Windows’ role as a user interface. What do you think?
