Today in Social

Here are some of the social and media highlights from the keynote presentation at Apple’s developer conference. Apple is integrating Twitter pretty deeply into iOS 5. It will offer single sign-in and contact integration, plus instant tweet-ability for the iPhone camera, photos, Safari and maps. Yet, muddling matters a bit, Apple’s also introducing a proprietary iOS-only messaging service with features similar to BlackBerry and GroupMe. Apple’s new PhotoStream syncs photos across devices, but cloud storage is limited to 30 days, so it’s not a challenger to Flickr, Instagram or Facebook. On the media side, Apple’s got a new Newsstand within the App Store with background downloads, and Game Center with user discovery (friends of friends) and recommendations. The iCloud features are aimed at simple synchronization and back up, with document APIs. And iCloud powers iTunes sync and stream for iTunes-purchased games and songs (no videos or podcasts) to 10 devices for free. Apple will offer a very competitive $25/year, unlimited storage space scan and match service for users’ songs that were ripped or purchased elsewhere. No on-demand music service for music you don’t own; no new social music features.
