Today in Mobile

Google Offers went live today in a pretty modest fashion: Google users in Portland┬áreceived an e-mail offering $10 worth of food and drink for only $3 at Floyd’s Coffee Shop. Similar offers are in the pipeline from other Portland-area businesss, and Google has said it will bring the service to New York and the Bay Area “soon.” Google eventually hopes to tie Offers into its upcoming Wallet service, providing a comprehensive system of discounts, payments and advertising on the phone. That’s an ambitious goal, to be sure, but today’s underwhelming (and fairly quiet) launch indicates Google understands very well that this project will be years in the making.
