There’s a lot of speculation surrounding Google’s re-organization today. In his first week’s return as CEO, Larry Page has watched Google’s former head of products leave, and has created seven SVPs of business units. There are many ways to try to interpret these tea leaves. But it’s pretty clear that Page is trying to establish some independence within those units, presumably to juice up innovation in a few of them. And it’s clear that they’re all important businesses for Google. The units are Search, Advertising, YouTube, Android, and three that might surprise you: Local and commerce, Social, and Chrome.
