New data from IDC indicates the worldwide handset market grew by 19.8 percent in the first quarter of 2011, with much of the growth coming from smartphone sales in emerging markets. Unsurprisingly, Apple played a large role as it saw its market share surge from 2.8 percent during the year-prior period to 5 percent in the most recent quarter. So while iOS’s share of the U.S. market may have plateaued as Android gains momentum, Apple’s global handset sales continue to ramp up.
