Amidst the layoffs – 900 or so, most in India back-office ops – AOL is still generating some other news. This interview with Tim Armstrong reveals a couple of tidbits. Besides noting that its Finance titles were losing $20 million a year, Armstrong sketches out where new acquisition Outside.in fits. Its search engine for hyperlocal news and blog content will integrate with Patch, but it also has a growing licensing business with publishers like CNN, so it will keep its brand. And AOL’s launching a mobile music app called Play that leverages Rdio’s new API. Mobile song sharing is a great idea, but Zune did it better – this shares only samples if only one party is an Rdio subscriber. Play is sponsored by T-mobile, and AOL wants to build out its mobile advertising business. Meanwhile, here’s the bad news – these are AOL brands that are struggling or withering.
