Today in Social

Two NewNet-oriented acquisitions today. AOL bought Outside.in, a site that aggregates news and blog content on local neighborhoods. It works like a search engine where the input is a neighborhood or zipcode. That’s not a bad way to access local content, but I doubt most people would start with that kind of approach rather than with something that looks more like a newspaper or a calendar. It should fit nicely into AOL’s hyperlocal Patch network of hyperlocal sites with a semi-content farm creation model. CBS acquired Clicker, a site that acts like a TV Guide for online video. Clicker has an intriguing recommendations engine and lots of social sharing. It’s pretty well integrated with Facebook, too. Clicker is a good asset for CBS, and fits nicely under a TV brand. Obviously it can’t cheat too much toward CBS content, but there ought to be good cross-promotion opportunities.
