Wi-Fi’s claim to a place in the ZigBee-dominated home energy management space just got a little bit of support from Google’s PowerMeter and partner Blue Line Innovations. The two were expected to announce this morning that they’ve joined forces, with Blue Line supplying a Wi-Fi enabled PowerCost Monitor device to work with Google’s home energy management platform. Blue Line already has a partnership with Microsoft’s Hohm home energy platform. As for Google PowerMeter, it has partnerships underway with Energy Inc., maker of The Energy Detective, and U.K.-based home energy management system makers AlertMe and Current Cost. Most of the smart meters being deployed in North America are going to use low-power wireless standard ZigBee to connect home energy management networks, but Wi-Fi is expected to play its own role as an incumbent system for household computing and broadband networking.
