Today in Mobile
I’m with the family enjoying a week-long vacation in Kauai, so my postings (particularly in the space) may not be as consistent as usual. But the top story in mobile this early Monday morning is Starbucks’ move to expand its mobile payments effort to more than 300 outlets in New York. I’ve long been skeptical of the “mobile wallet” concept because of questions about viable business models — How do you increase the number of players in the traditional retail value chain without asking consumers to spend more? — but Starbucks is one of the few behemoths in the U.S. who could actually move the needle here. The entire m-commerce space will be watching this closely.
